HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Piet Mondrian was born Pieter Cornelias Mondrian Jr. in the Netherlands in 1872 and studied at an imposture academy called the Rijksakademie avant-garde Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam from 1892 to 1897.
